A Weekend at Grand View Lodge

Even the most relaxing getaways can come with a little drama—and in our case, it arrived in the form of a late-night storm that tore through the Brainerd Lakes area during our two-night stay at Grand View Lodge (GVL) in mid-June. The same storm system also brought along with it the strongest measured winds in Minnesota in almost 13 years, particularly in the Bemidji area.

But when the power went out and trees came down, it wasn’t panic that defined the experience—it was the poise and professionalism of the GVL team. Staff remained calm and gracious, checking in with guests, answering questions, and ensuring service continued as seamlessly as possible despite the setback. Their response turned what could’ve been a stressful disruption into a testament to the resort’s hospitality.

Boardwalk Kitchen & Bar Brings a Coastal Cool—and Racing Thrill—to Shakopee

There’s a new buzz in Shakopee, and you can hear it from the thundering hooves at Canterbury Park to the clink of cocktail glasses on Boardwalk Kitchen & Bar’s sprawling patio. This brand-new dining and entertainment destination opened June 21, but judging by the crowd, the city’s already claiming it as its own. (We’ve been waiting for Boardwalk since last fall, when we posted the news in November 2024.)

Christy Sovereign’s Vision for the 2026 Special Olympics

On a cold mid-February afternoon, I hurried into Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus, breathing in warm relief as I stepped into the entryway. An unfamiliar face nodded at me, arm outstretched—a warm smile and teary eyes met mine.

I shook hands with Christy Sovereign, CEO of the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, which will be held next summer in the Twin Cities. Instantly, I knew this wasn’t going to be just a professional conversation: It was going to be personal and heartfelt—and deeply rooted in Sovereign’s own life.

For over 40 years, Sovereign has been a part of the Special Olympics community—but her connection runs deeper. “It’s a personal journey for me,” she shares, emotion welling in her voice. “My sister, Katie, has been an athlete in Special Olympics for over 40 years, and our entire family has been deeply involved, as coaches, volunteers, and super fans.”

Sleeping Above the Shoreline at North Shore Camping Co.

My husband, our dog, and I recently spent two nights at North Shore Camping Co., and it was exactly the quiet reset we didn’t know we needed. Nestled in the forest along the ridgeline just above Lake Superior, our walk-in tält (a luxury tent) provided a perfect blend of rustic charm and thoughtful comfort. Even in mid-May—when the air was crisp and the temperatures dipped (much) lower than expected—the tent kept us warm and cozy thanks to ample blankets, a gas stove, and a beautifully designed interior that made us feel right at home in the woods.

Exploring St. Peter, Minnesota | Minnesota Monthly

Growing up in southern Minnesota, I always identified St. Peter as the geographic midpoint on our treks to the Twin Cities. It meant there were only two more towns before Belle Plaine, which was essentially “the cities” to us southern folk. After all, there were no stoplights in the town I grew up in (speaking of, remember all those stoplights along U.S. Hwy. 169?).There was always something so serene about St. Peter while passing through, noses pressed to the window, watching the brick- and tre...

All Women’s Sports, All the Time | Minnesota Monthly

“Will you get him the raspberry sauce?” A voice calls out to a server from behind a long, worn wooden bar. Lighthearted chuckles waft through the tavern. The bartender is simultaneously pouring a tap beer and changing the TV channel to Olympic women’s bobsledding. Even with juggling multiple patrons and running food and drinks as needed, she doesn’t look the least bit flustered—she looks… happy.

Why We’re Hooked on True Crime | Minnesota Monthly

There’s something undeniably captivating about true crime. Whether it’s the pulse-pounding drama of a courtroom confession, the chilling details of unsolved mysteries, or the twisted psychology of perpetrators, true crime fascinates us.For me, my fascination started young—probably too young, if I’m being honest. I vividly remember the early ’90s, when our neighborhood continually left our porch lights on in solidarity for the Jacob Wetterling family. The news headlines are still plastered in my...
